Emerging Architecture: Exhibition in Germany shows prize-winners
[06-05-2008] The 24 prize-winning entries for the AR Awards for Emerging Architecture 2007 are on show in an exhibition in Germany this year. The competition is one of the most important awards for young architects in the world. Since 1999, the magazine Architectural Review (AR) has presented awards to outstanding projects in the field of buildings, interior design, landscapes and urban spaces, as well as product design. In Germany the exhibition is presented by Wilkhahn.
Bad Münder. Young architects not older than 45 years of age can enter projects that have already been carried out for the AR Award for Emerging Architecture.

The international magazine Architectural Review presented the coveted award for the ninth time in succession. Entries from more than 50 countries covered a wide range of design activities from interior design, landscape projects and small pavilions to conversions of existing buildings. The projects were judged by a six-strong jury of internationally acclaimed architects, including Shirley Blumberg (KPMB, Toronto), Shuhei Endo (Osaka) as well as Jo Nero (Johannesburg). The members of the jury selected three winners. A further six projects were highly commended. Nine projects were commended and six received honourable mentions. Important criteria for the jury included sensitivity with regard to location and context, awareness of ecological issues, the discerning use of materials, as well as creativity while using space and light.
Winners from Japan, Spain and Germany/Chile Taketo Shimohigoshi / AAE from Tokyo appealed to the jury with a vegetation installation at the FLEG Daikanyama Showroom in Tokyo, Japan. The intelligently "planted beams" are a kind of modern hanging gardens from Antiquity, re- envisaged for chaotic Tokyo of the New Age. Once again, this project shows the potential of this Award for repeatedly discovering unusual architecture.
Another award-winner was Ecosistema Urbano Arquitectos for the EcoBoulevard of Vallecas, Madrid, Spain. This radical vision of "air trees" in a suburb of Madrid, which does not only succeed in reducing the dry heat, but also functions as a social meeting place, is marked by a high degree of awareness of ecological responsibility.
It is really quite a simple idea: these provisional mini-forests create public places with a well- tempered environment until they can be replaced by natural tree growth. Architects: Ecosistema Urbano Arquitectos, Madrid, Spain. Photo/Copyright: Roland Halbe
The third award-winning project was the "Wall House" by the German-Chilean architectural team of Marc Frohn and Mario Rojas Toledo (FAR frohn&rojas - Cologne::Santiago de Chile::Ciudad de México). The judges got especially convinced by the creative concept of this house built in Santiago de Chile. The architects experiment with different materials to create an inventive, low budget prototype dwelling.
